Lacey, WA – Matt Marcoe singled to drive in what would be the winning run as Saint Martin’s defeated Western Oregon 4-3 in game two of a Great Northwest Athletic Conference doubleheader Friday afternoon at Saints Field. WOU took game one 4-0.
Michael McIver and Luke Abbott singled to drive in runs in the bottom of the first to give SMU the 2-0 lead. But Western answered back in the next frame as Devon Bouvier sent a two-run shot over the center field wall.
With two on and two out in the fourth Marcoe singled to score Cody Brooks from second and make it a 3-2 ballgame. The Wolves again quickly evened things up as Grant Glover hit a solo homer to left.
In the sixth inning Marcoe came up with the same scenario, two on one out, and delivered again, singling to center and scoring Brooks from third.
James Douglas threw six and two-thirds innings to get the win; He didn’t walk a batter and struck out four. Brock Peterson came in to get the final out, throwing one pitch and recording the save.
Marcoe finished with three hits in the game while Abbott had two. The Wolves, who had five hits in the game, were led by Glover with two.
Game one was all pitching as WOU’s Jacob Pettit threw a complete game shutout allowing just three hits while walking one and striking out 10. Casey Mitchell took the loss throwing eight innings and giving up only five hits.
Travis Jones and Cole accounted for all of the Saints’ hits; Jones with two and Cole with one.
The Saints finish their season with a 20-29 record overall and 15-17 in the GNAC.
