Lacey, WA – Western Oregon scored six runs in the third inning of game one and the seventh inning of the second game to defeat Saint Martin’s 8-3 and 11-5 in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference doubleheader Thursday afternoon at Saints Field.
RBI singles by Travis Jones and Luke Abbott followed by a sacrifice fly by Cody Brooks gave SMU the early 3-0 in the bottom of the first.
Western Oregon answered back in the third as they plated six runs on six hits, including a homerun by Daniel Dillard, and took advantage of three Saint errors. They tacked on one more in both the fifth and ninth innings.
Starter Michael Ward settled in for WOU allowing just one hit over the final eight innings to record the win. He walked one and struck out 10 in the game.  Abbott, Jones, Brooks and Josh Grenier accounted for all of SMU’s hits.
After the Wolves scored one in the third, SMU snagged the lead in the fourth on a two-run double down the left field line by Bobby Twedt Jr. But a four spot in the fifth would put Western Oregon back on top 5-2.
Abbott led off the sixth inning with a single and Twedt Jr. drew the walk. Matt Marco then doubled down the right field line, scoring pinch runner Adam Hudspeth, putting runners on second and third. One batter later Andrew Elke tied the game with a two-run single up the middle.
But the Saints couldn’t put it away giving up six runs in the top of the seventh on four hits, capped off by a two-run double from Jason Moseby.
Reliever Kirk Lind picked up the win for WOU in two innings of work. Elke was the only Saint with multiple hits in the game with two.
SMU will play their final two games of the season tomorrow with a doubleheader against the Wolves starting at noon. The Saints will honor their seniors prior to the first game.
