Lacey, WA – Saint Martin’s women’s basketball has announced the signing of four student-athletes, three out of high school and one junior college transfer, to National Letters of Intent for the 2010-2011 season. Joining the Saints’ next year will be freshmen Heather Worley, Jori Skorpik, Chelsea Haskey and transfer Andrea Schutt. The Saints have also added transfer Marelle Moehrle.
“I am very pleased with what we accomplished with this recruiting class,” said head coach Tim Healy. “We had two very specific needs, depth and size, which we were able to address. And in doing so we also were fortunate enough to add some tremendous young talent which will help immediately and in the future.”
Worley, a 5’7’ guard from Benton City, WA, was a four-time all-conference player. She averaged 18 points and 10 rebounds for Southridge High School where she became the all-time scoring leader. A 2010 all-defensive all-conference selection, Worley was also named to the all-area team the past two years. She was a four year started in three sports, basketball, volleyball and softball, and holds a 3.99 grade point.
“We are ecstatic about this signing,” said Healy. “Heather is an explosive athlete who has an outstanding work ethic and attitude. She is a lock-down defender and a dynamic scorer. We have great expectations for her on the court and to top it off she is another in a long line of great students we have attracted to the program.”
Skorpik is a 5’3” point guard out of Kamiaken High School in Kennewick, WA. As an all-conference selection she averaged nine points, six assists and four steals per game. She was also a first-team all-State soccer player.
“Jori is a young lady we think has a chance to become a solid point guard at SMU,” said Healy. “She is a quick, in your face defender, who has great vision and passing ability and can make the open three. Jori is also a decorated soccer player and has shown she has the desire and attitude to become a true, pure point guard.”
Haskey is a local product out of Black Hills High School. The 6’1” post averaged 21.1 points and 11.4 rebounds per game her senior year. She was all-State honorable mention as well as first-team all-league and first-team all-area in both 2009 and 2010. Haskey also received Sporting News All-American honorable mention recognition.
“We are thrilled to have signed a great local player like Chelsea. She has the potential to become a very, very good player at SMU,” said Healy. “There are two things that make her special on the court, first is her ability to finish. She simply finds a way to get the ball in the basket. Secondly, her footwork is exceptional. Good fundamental footwork as a post will take you a long way. It’s also fun to have a player whose high school coach, Robin Johnson, played here at SMU.”
The Saints’ lone junior transfer is Andrea Schutt from Sunnyside, WA. Schutt comes to SMU from Wenatchee Valley College where she averaged 11.8 points and 4.9 rebounds per game. The 6’2” post was all-State honorable mention at Sunnyside Christian High School in 2008.
“I have followed Andrea since she was in high school and I am excited that she is now a Saint! She has improved in leaps and bounds over the past few years and I still feel she has not reached her full potential as a player,” said Healy. “She brings some needed height to our lineup and has the ability to score with her back to the basket and shooting jumpers. I believe Andrea can become a significant contributor to our program.”
Rounding out the Saints’ new additions is a transfer from Western Washington University, 5’8” guard, Moehrle. Moehrle prepped at Meadowdale High School and played for the Vikings from 2—7-09 where she started 10 games and made 92 three-pointers in 230 attempts (.400) while averaging 6.5 points per game. She did not play last season and has two years of eligibility remaining.
“Marelle adds some immediate depth to our team. She has played successfully in the conference and is clearly a tremendous outside shooting threat,” said Healy.
The Saints graduated four seniors, including two starters, from a team that finished 12-15 last year. With the addition of this year’s recruits SMU is looking to be a solid force in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference.
