Lacey, WA – Saint Martin’s shutout Montana State Billings in a 4-0 victory in game one then mounted an impressive rally to nearly come away with game two of a Great Northwest Athletic Conference doubleheader on Sunday at the SMU Softball Field. MSUB would win game two 12-8.
With two outs in the bottom of the first Joslyn Eugenio and Morgan Klemm hit back-to-back singles. Emily Squiers then stepped up and launched one over the left field wall to put the Saints on top.
SMU added an insurance run in the fifth on a RBI single up the middle by Morgan Klemm.
Brandi Klemm shut down the Yellowjacket offense as she threw a complete game. She allowed just four hits and struck out three.
Seven of the nine Saint starters picked up a hit in the game. Amanda Goings had two hits for MSUB.
Billings jumped out fast and early in game two. They started things off with five runs in the top of the first. MSUB continued to add to their lead making it a 10-0 ballgame going into the bottom of the fourth.
But things got interesting in the bottom half of the inning as the Billings defense fell apart. The Yellowjackets committed six errors in the inning allowing Saint Martin’s to score eight unearned runs.
SMU had two hits in the inning; both by Eugenio, a single to lead things off and later in the inning a two-run double to left center.
The Yellowjackets got out of the inning and reliever Lindsey Trenary held of the Saints the rest of the way.
SMU finished with four hits in the game, the two by Eugenio and one each from Kirstin Davidson and Morgan Klemm.
Amanda Hood and Kaycee Hoffman each picked up three hits for MSUB with Hoffman driving in five runs.
The Saints are now 10-24 in the GNAC and 16-32 overall. They will play their final home games of the year on Thursday, April 29, in a non-conference matchup against Simon Fraser.
