Monmouth, OR – Saint Martin’s outhit Western Oregon 29-23 but left a total of 31 runners on base allowing the Wolves to complete a four-game sweep of the Saints at the WOU Softball Field. WOU won 2-1 and 4-2 on Saturday, 3-2 and 3-1 on Sunday.
SMU took a 1-0 lead in the first game as Kirstin Davidson scored on a single to left by Morgan Klemm. But that was all the offense the Saints would get as Western’s Jessica Wood held them to just one hit thought the next six innings.
WOU picked up one run in both the second and fourth innings to take the win.
The Saints again snatched the early lead in game two. This time a double to right by Joslyn Eugenio brought Davidson around to score.
Western Oregon used a two-run fourth to take a 3-1 lead but the Saints battled back. With two outs in the fifth Morgan Klemm singled to left field, scoring Megan Antonovich and putting SMU within one.
Brittany Reeves came in and shut down the Saints through the final two innings to preserve the victory for WOU.
Eugenio led the Saints with two hits in the game while five others had one hit apiece.
After Western Oregon took a 1-0 advantage in the first inning, SMU answered back with two runs in the third. Antonovich led off the inning with a single, advanced to third on a single by Eugenio, and came around to score on a wild pitch. Eugenio would eventually score on a single and rundown.
Amanda Fleer led off the fourth with a home run to tie it and WOU scored the eventual game-winner on a groundout in the fifth.
Eugenio again led the Saints, this time getting three hits in four at bats.
Though they knocked out seven hits, the Saints were held scoreless through the first five frames on the final game. It wasn’t until the sixth inning that Brittany Burgess got an RBI single to right to knot things at 1-1.
But WOU quickly put up two runs in their half of the inning to regain the lead and hold on for the win.
Davidson and Eugenio had two hits each in the game.
The Saints, 16-30 overall and 10-22 in the GNAC, will return home to take on Montana State Billings this weekend with doubleheaders starting at noon both days.
