Burnaby, B.C. – Saint Martin’s used two big innings to come back and defeat NAIA No. 10 ranked Simon Fraser in both games of a non-conference doubleheader, taking game one 7-6 and game two 6-4 on Wednesday afternoon.
The Clan put up solid numbers in the first two innings to take a 6-1 lead over SMU. But the Saints found their stride in the fourth inning when they put up six runs to go ahead.
With one out Jaimee Aiwohi reached on an error to jump start the inning. A double by Kristine Kaneshiro would set things up for Megan Antonovich who singled up the middle to score Aiwohi. Kirstin Davidson drew the walk to load the bases.
A single by Joslyn Eugenio, a walk by Morgan Klemm and a groundout by Kelsie McGladrey would score three more. Brandi Klemm capped things off with a two run single to second giving the Saints all they would need for the victory.
Brandi Klemm tossed all seven innings for SMU and after a rough start finished with 10 hits and two walks while striking out four.
SMU, who had 11 hits in the game, was led by Antonovich and Eugenio with three hits apiece. Leah Riske had three hits and three RBI for SFU.
Game two was much the same with Simon Fraser capturing the lead. They went into the seventh up 4-1 only to see the Saints strike again.
SMU started things off with two runs off RBI singles by Davidson and Eugenio. An error at third with two outs would load the bases for the Saints. Emily Squiers brought home the eventual game-winners with a bases clearing double to center.
Eugenio picked up the win in relief, throwing 2 1/3 innings allowing one run on only four hits with no walks and two strikeouts.
Both Davidson and Squiers had two hits for the Saints in the game.
The Saints, 16-26, will be on the road this weekend as they travel to Monmouth, OR to take on Western Oregon University.
