Lacey, WA – Pacific Lutheran put up 20 runs on 29 hits to take both games of a doubleheader over Saint Martin’s in the season opener for both teams on Saturday at Saints Field. PLU took game one 12-5 and game two 8-3.
The Lutes got one run across in the top of the first to take the early lead but SMU answered back with a three spot in the fifth. With the bases loaded Travis Jones singled to center to drive in a run and one batter later Josh Grenier slotted one up the middle to pick up two RBI.
Pacific Lutheran broke the game open the next half inning scoring six runs on seven hits including a two-run triple by Jaron Iwakami. The Lutes would tack on three more runs in the seventh and two more in the eighth.
A ground out and a sacrifice fly gave the Saints two more runs in the eighth, but it wasn’t enough.
Ryan Aratani was 3-4 with two RBI for PLU. The Saints got two hits apiece from Andrew Elke, Jones, and Grenier.
Trey Watt picked up the win while Thomas DeBoer was tagged with the loss.
PLU came swinging out if the gate in game two, posting six runs in the first three innings. The Saints got one back in the fourth on an RBI single by Michael McIver. They tallied two more in the fifth when Andy Cole singled up the middle to score Elke and Cody Brooks. But that was as close as they would get, PLU added two more runs in the sixth.
Robert Bleeker gave up all three runs in the win while Antone Saltvick took the loss allowing four earned runs on the day. Cole and McIver both went 2-3 in the game.
The Saints are back in action tomorrow as they travel to PLU to take on the Lutes in a single game.
