Lacey, WA – Western Oregon outscored Saint Martin’s 11-8 in overtime to come away with an 80-77 win Thursday night in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference game at the Marcus Pavilion.
After falling behind 44-38 at halftime, the Wolves kept themselves in it cutting the Saints’ advantage to one multiple times but never capturing lead. With 3:53 left in regulation Galen Squiers hit a layup to make it a 66-63 game. Two and a half minutes later Rico Myles sank one on the other end to put WOU within one and with just 44 seconds to play Matt Schmidt tied it with a free throw to force the extra period.
Both teams exchanged baskets in overtime until Tarance Glynn converted the three point play with a layup and a made free throw to give Western Oregon the 78-77 edge. Glynn was fouled again with 15 seconds on the clock and hit both free throws to make it 80-77. The Saints got of one final shot but it was no good.
“That was a tough game,” said head coach Keith Cooper. “We just didn’t have enough composure down the stretch.”
Jeremy Green led the Saints with 20 points. Blake Poole, with his 12th double-double of the season, had 19 points and 18 rebounds. Jared Howard added 13 points while Squiers picked up 10.
SMU forced 19 Western Oregon turnovers but was beat on the boards 43-39. They were also just 54 percent from the line, well below their season average of 70 percent.
Myles finished the game with 29 points and 12 rebounds with Glynn adding 16 points.
Saint Martin’s will hit the road to face Western Washington in Bellingham this Saturday in the second game of a doubleheader.
