Lacey, WA – Saint Martin’s University women’s soccer head coach Rob Walker has announced that the Saints have signed a total of two student-athletes, Molly Campbell and Gina Cardenas, to the women’s team for the upcoming 2010 season.
Defender Campbell comes to the Saints from Federal Way High School where she was a three time all-league selection from 2007-2009. She was also team captain and named to the all-city team her junior and senior years.
“Molly is an excellent presence in the back. Her ability to mark and be a ball winner are two strengths that will lift her to the next level in the college game,” said Walker. “She has very good habits especially in the one versus one situations and is tough to beat in the air.”
Cardenas is a goalkeeper from Auburn Riverside High School. She finished her high school career with a total of 19 shutouts, earning first-team all-area, all-league and all-state honors her senior year.
“We think Gina reads the game well and makes good decisions on and off her line,” said Walker. “Gina has very good technique with her feet and is comfortable playing the ball long and short. This is a skill that will be well-suited for the demands of the college game.”
The Saints are looking to improve on their 8-4 Great Northwest Athletic Conference record that saw them finish in third place last season.
