Lacey, WA – All five starters for Saints Martin’s scored in double figures as the Saints picked up the 80-74 win over the University of Alaska Fairbanks in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference matchup Thursday night at the Marcus Pavilion.
Dara Zack led the charge with 16 points while pulling down 12 rebounds and dishing out three assists. Roni Jo Mielke and Katie Hawkins both added 14 for the Saints who shot 46.9 percent from the field. Jamey Gelhar scored 12 points and Krissy Bassett posted 10.
After a first half that saw twelve lead changes the Nanooks maintained a slight 37-36 advantage going into the locker room. But a jumper by Hawkins to start off the second half would put the Saints on top.
SMU held onto the lead, going up by as much as 12, before Fairbanks rallied. With 4:08 on the clock, the score 71-62, UAF put together a 10-1 run to tie the game at 72-72 and took the lead on a layup by Ronisha Edwards.
Hawkins hit back-to-back baskets to put SMU up by two with 57 seconds to play. The Nanooks were forced to foul with the clock winding down, sending Gelhar to the line twice in the final 20 seconds. Gelhar hit all four shots to put the game away.
Edwards finished with a game-high 23 points and 14 rebounds for the Nanooks, now 2-21 overall and 1-11 in the GNAC. Adrienne Beans came off the bench to put up 18 points.
The Saints, now 10-13 on the season and 4-8 in conference, are back at home on Saturday taking on the University of Alaska Anchorage with game time slated for 5:15pm. It is Think Pink Night and all fans are encouraged to wear pink to the game as the Saints show their support in the fight against breast cancer.
