Nampa, ID – Northwest Nazarene scored the first two points and held the lead the rest of the way as they picked up the 79-60 win over Saint Martin’s in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference game at the Johnson Sports Center on Thursday night.
NNU went up by as much as seven in the first half. The Saints closed the gap to within two multiple times but went into the break down by four 35-31.
A three-pointer by Roni Jo Mielke cut the gap to just one, 37-36, two minutes into the second half but that was as close as SMU would get the rest of the way. The Crusaders used a 13-3 run in the final four minutes to open up a double-digit lead and solidify the win.
Mielke led the offensive attack for the Saints with 17 points while Krissy Bassett added 13 and Jamey Gelhar scored 11. The Crusaders shut down the Saints leading scorer, Dara Zack who is averaging 17.1 points per game this season, holding her to just five on the night. Zack’s five points, however, did give her 1000 points for her collegiate career. She is now the 40th member of the GNAC 1000-Point Club.
The Crusaders were led by Lindsay Brady with 21 points and Janee Olds off the bench with 16. NNU finished the game shooting 52.7 percent from the field, 50 percent from the three.
SMU returns home for a game against Montana State Billings on Saturday, February 13.
