Lacey, WA – Dara Zack scored a game-high 24 points but Saint Martin’s couldn’t pull off the victory losing to Central Washington 78-69 in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference game Thursday night at the Marcus Pavilion.
The two teams jockeyed for the lead in the first half before CWU went up by five with a minute to play. But layups by Megan Busch and Jamey Gelhar cut it to a one point game at the half, 32-31.
With 9:39 left to play, Central extended their lead to eight. SMU put together a 13-5 run, capped off by a Zack layup to take a 59-58 advantage.
The Wildcats went on to score 16 of the next 19 points, holding SMU to just three points over the next four minutes, to open up a 12 point, 74-62, lead and seal the win.
The Saints won the battle on the boards, 35-27, with Zack pulling down nine. Central shot 55 percent while the Saints hit at a 40 percent clip on the night.
Krissy Bassett tallied 16 points while Gelhar added 12 points with both picking up seven rebounds for SMU, now 1-6 in the GNAC and 7-11 overall. CWU was led by Jenn Jacobs and Sara Bergner with 19 and 18 points respectively. The Wildcats are now 2-4 in the conference and 5-11 on the season.
Saint Martin’s is off until next Thursday when they take on Western Oregon in the opening game of a doubleheader slated for 5:15pm at the Marcus Pavilion.
