Lacey, WA – Ashley Engel and Kayci Donatelli teamed up for the game winning goal three minutes into the first overtime period giving Saint Martin’s the 1-0 win over Grand Canyon University Sunday afternoon at the Regional Athletic Complex.
In the 93rd minute SMU keeper Engel took the ball across midfield and served it up from 45 yards out. Grand Canyon keeper Mileena Bushei got a hand on it but Kayci Donatelli was right there and sent it in for the win.
On the other end Engel made three saves in goal for SMU. Buchei also had three saves before giving up the game winner.
“It was great in our last non-conference preparation game to get settled in and have some sharp performances,” said head coach Rob Walker. “Ashley Engel in goal had some nice saves and great distribution; her assist to end the game in overtime was great to see. Caley Wiseman was great on the left hand side of the field and Kaylee Kramer contributed in several roles. Down the middle of the field, Cayla Dixon and Kayci Donatelli were solid. We rested a player or two today too and I thought our depth looked good.”
Saint Martin’s outshot the ‘Lopes 12-7 and held a 5-2 advantage on corner kicks. The win improves the Saints’ record to 4-2 on the season.
It was the last non-conference matchup for the Saints who begin Great Northwest Athletic Conference play on Wednesday, September 16th, in Bellingham against Western Washington University.
