Softball: Saints split in final home games
SB 24
April 27, 2009
Lacey, WA – Western Washington held onto an early lead to earn an 8-5 win over Saint Martin’s in the opener of a doubleheader but couldn’t stop the Saints in game two falling 6-4 Sunday at the SMU Softball Field.
Jamie Herrick picked up the win for SMU in the second game throwing six innings and allowing just two runs on four hits while striking out three.
Morgan Klemm and Holly Morris hit back-to-back homeruns in the bottom of the first to give SMU a 3-0 lead. They tacked on two more in the third on a shot by Kristi Sigafoos and a RBI single by Brandi Klemm to make it 5-1 before getting their final run in the fifth.
Western Washington chipped away scoring one run in the sixth and two more in the seventh but fell short as the Saints got the victory.
SMU scattered 11 hits including two each by Brandi Klemm, Kristine Kaneshiro, and Kristi Sigafoos.
The Vikings jumped out to an early 5-0 lead in the second game before SMU battled back. Kaneshiro doubled for two runs in the second and Kirstin Davidson doubled in two more in the third followed by a WWU error.
But Western picked up a couple of insurance runs in the fourth and fifth to pull away.
Kaneshiro and Kelsie McGladrey had two hits each with Kaneshiro picking up a triple to go with her run scoring double.
The Saints have just one series left on the season as they head to Northwest Nazarene for their final games of the year April 1 and 2 in Nampa, ID.
