Lacey, WA – Kayci Donatelli scored the game winning goal, her second of the day, with 1:58 left in the first overtime period to give Saint Martin’s the 3-2 victory over Central Washington University in their final game of the season Saturday afternoon at the SMU Soccer Field.
Joanne Packer took the ball up the field, passed it off to Megan Beisley who found Donatelli five yards in front of the goal for the win. It was the fifth straight win for the Saints who finish the season 12-7-0 overall and 7-4-0 in the GNAC.
“Megan giving the ball to Kayci, who found herself in a great sport right in front of the goal, was a great way to end the game and the season,” said head coach Rob Walker.
Donatelli opened the scoring in the 22nd minute as she got the ball in traffic just three yards out and found the back of the net. Julianna Sackeyfio was credited with the assist.
Jenny Baker made it a 2-0 game just before the break as she scored on a corner kick from Jill Webb at the 43:20 mark.
Carson McKole picked up two goals for Central in the second half, in the 56th and 66th minutes, to tie the game at 2-2 and send it into overtime.
Both teams finished the game with 13 shots apiece but the Saints held the decisive edge on corner kicks at 8-2. Ashley Engel made three saves in goal for SMU while Amber Easterbrook had five saves for the Wildcats.
“We set an objective in the middle of the year to finish the season strong and win our final five games. Today we accomplished that objective with a great win and I felt very good for all the girls,” said Walker.
