Burnaby, B.C. – Simon Fraser picked up a goal in the 65th minute to defeat Saint Martin’s 1-0 in non-conference action Sunday afternoon at Terry Fox Field.
Sarah Boulton got the game-winner off a 40 yard run from April Coffin who crossed it into the box. Boulton fired a shot from just inside 18 yards into the near post for the goal.
The Saints had a great opportunity to tie in the 80th minute when Julianna Sackeyfio blasted a shot through traffic from 20 yards out but SFU keeper Cassie Newbrook was able to get a hand on it and send it just over the crossbar to preserve the win.
The two teams combined for 27 shots in the game, SMU had 12 and Simon Fraser took 15. Ashley Engel made six saves in goal for the Saints while Newbrook had seven saves for the Clan.
“I felt today’s game was a carbon copy of last year, we didn’t get out and play very well in the first half. The second half we played with a bit more energy and purpose,” said head coach Rob Walker. “I was disappointed that we gave up the goal; Ashley was playing very well in goal. SFU will be a great team to have in the GNAC next year.”
Saint Martin’s will return home to take on Seattle Pacific University on Wednesday, October 14th, at 3pm with the game set to take place on the new SMU Soccer Field on the Saint Martin’s Campus.
